About the Permit Test

Before you can get a driver’s license of any kind, you will need to pass a written knowledge test. More commonly known as the permit test, this test is designed to assess your knowledge of the rules of the road.

 

What Type of Questions Can I Expect?

For most states, questions are typically in multiple-choice format with one correct answer. Questions cover the following topics:

  • Traffic Laws
  • Pavement Markings
  • Road Signs
  • Vehicle Handling

How Many Questions are on the Test?

The number of questions featured on the permit will vary depending on the state you live in but in general you can expect between 20 and 50 questions.

EXAMPLES:

Idaho: 40 questions.
Arizona: 30 questions.
Indiana: 50 questions.

Passing percentages will vary according to your state but typically range between 70-83%.

 

How Should I Prepare for the Test?

Study your state’s driver’s manual and test your knowledge using practice tests. You can find both at PermitTest.com.
How Much Does the Test Cost?
The majority of states require a testing fee to be paid on the day of the test. Learner’s permit test fees range between $5 to $25 depending on the state.

 

Where Do I Take the Test?

Tests are administered via computer or pencil-and-paper at your local driver’s licensing office. In general you do not need to make an appointment but you will need to bring valid documents verifying your identity.

At a minimum, most states will require:

  • Proof of identity and/or citizenship.
  • Proof of residency.
  • Completion of a vision test.
  • Completion of a driver’s education program.
    • This is a requirement of some but not all states.
